Rep. Folwell, Why Don't You Ban Divorce If You Want To Protect Marriage?

Via ThinkProgress:
North Carolina House Speaker Pro Tem Dale Folwell (R) was very involved in the effort to advance a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, arguing that the measure would “protect” marriage in the state. The measure passed through both chambers last week in a matter of 24 hours and will now be on the May ballot.
This morning, Folwell came under fire on the radio show “Charlotte Talks,” as host Mike Collins challenged him on why he supports banning same-sex marriage, but not divorce.
Folwell doesn't have much to say on the subject.

  1. Ban divorce? Not so fast. What happens to those that are abused at home? What happens when either spouse has an affair or multiple affairs, a.k.a adultery? What happens when one spouse abandons the other? The idea of banning divorce is not the same thing as banning same-sex marriage. Knee jerk reaction says that yeah, to protect marriage you should ban divorce if your going to protect it by banning same sex-marriage. But stop and think about it a moment. That cup doesn't hold water I'm afraid.

  2. it was simply a question intended to illustrate the flawed logic of folwell's belief that banning same sex marriage will protect the institution of marriage.

  3. Maybe I am being a slug this morning but I see them as two seperate issues; banning same sex marriage to protect the institution of marriage as one and banning divorce to protect the institution of marriage as another.

Perhaps Folwell is not certain why he believes what he believes?

  4. I don't think so. Next to sexual harassment, divorce is a big issue.

  5. Rep. Folwell is just one of those old school politicians who believe in the old ways. Times change and he shouldn't ban same sex marriage just because he doesn't believe it.

  6. Everyone has the right to love and be married. Even Gay couples have the right to marry. I think they should let them since they have the freedom to do so.

  7. I just can't understand why "he doesn't have an answer" when asked about banning divorce. The state even has a higher divorce rate than the national average. Let's just wait if North Carolinians will vote against the measure or not next year.

  8. Its just sad that he doesn't support same-sex marriage but even if he bans it in his state they can just go to California and be married there.

  9. I hope the people he represents agree with him somewhat on this issue. Oh, wait, he has no stand on it.

  10. I don't think banning divorce is the answer to save a marriage. The key to lessen the number of couples separating is to encourage them to enroll in marriage counselling and seminars. People need to realize the importance of patience and compromise before making a huge decision such as divorce.

  11. I would agree to some of the comments, I don't also think banning divorce is the best answer to save a marriage. It depends on the couples on how they handle their relationships.

  12. Banning divorce or same-sex marriage will not help solve relationship problems. Instead, our lawmakers should focus more on making bills that will encourage people to become better individuals.
